Alienware M-17x Review

Alienware has constantly amazed us by producing some of the most powerful laptops for the most processor intensive tasks, like gaming, and the new Alienware M-17x is no difference. It is among the most powerful gaming laptops around and it destroys the competition and sets its own standards

Design, Construction and Ergonomics:

Alienware M-17x comes with the new design, that looks like a fighter aircraft. The overall design is shard and new. The top has the usual look, but the sides finished with Anodized Aluminum are unique, and the front has intakes like a fighter aircraft, and with lights that have been a characteristic design of Alienware, the laptop looks stunningly brilliant. The looks are thousand times better than the plastic box looks of some other gaming laptops. It looks fresh and unique and it impresses and leaves an impact. A brilliant design of a brilliant machine! Buy it in Space Black or Lunar Silver, and looks do not disappoint.  Open it, and it reveals a high quality display, and the illuminated keyboard (it a cost option), and the touch pad has been moved to one side for more comfortable use. The Quick Touch control pad works brilliant and looks great. The looks are a huge improvement over the previous models. But all this size and weight has a drawback, the laptop is not portable, and it loves the desk, and it weighs a lot, over 4KG (weight depends on specs). It’s not easy to carry around and use on the go, and its battery time is also pretty low, but it can turn off the graphics card and switch to internal one and scale down the components, which saves a lot of power. But overall its size and weight makes it uncomfortable to use while traveling.

Features:

Alienware M-17x is a huge laptop with huge power, and with some of the most powerful specs among laptops. From processor to huge RAM, dual hard disks and dual Graphics Cards, it simply is among the best. Alienware M-17x offers huge processors range, starting form 2.4 GHz Intel Core2Duo P8600 to Intel Core2Duo T9800 (2.93 GHz) in the Core2Duo range. T9600 and T9800 are among the most powerful Mobile Core2Duo processors available and they tear through the benchmarks to reach the top. Providing enough power to handle almost everything. T9800 scores an impressive 2626 in 3dMard06 CPU. For those who want more, there is Intel Core2Quad Q9000 and Q9100 (2.26GHz, 12MB cache, 1066MHz FSB). Also it offers the most powerful mobile processor there is, the Core2 Extreme Quad Q9300 (2.53GHz, 12MB cache, 1066MHz FSB) which gives the laptop enough power to compete with the gaming desktops, so despite using a laptop, the user gets the power of a high spec desktop, and it performs extremely well in games, CAD designing and other tasks. Alienware offers 8GB DDR3 RAM running at 1333 MHz, which is more than enough for everything, and nothing, slows down. It offers up to 1 TB (2 x 500 GB) Hard Disks and for improved performance, there is SSD as well (up to 512 GB, 2 x 256GB), which is more than enough for anything the laptop will be used for. M-17x is aimed for gamers, so it has the top cards, single 1GB GeForce GTX 260m, and an option of dual GTX 260M and dual GTX  280M, which is again the best option with 14670 3dMark06 score. No game this year and possibly next year can trouble the mighty laptop. It is the best there is for gaming. The 17 inch dual-CCFL backlit LCD is also among the best, with the most vibrant colours and great colour accuracy, and supports very high resolutions, 1980 x 1200 WideUXGA 1200p, which is great for gaming and graphics designing. 8ms response time is also great.  For the optical drive, Alienware gives dual layer DVD writer, dual layer Blu-Ray combo and dual layer Blu-Ray writer. Other standard items include Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, 300Mbps Dual-Band a/g/n Wireless with MIMO Technology, High-Definition 5.1 Surround Sound Audio, Integrated Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 (1000 Mbps), Built-In 8-in-1 Media Card Reader, optional Express Card Digital TV Tuner, TV Tuner with Remote and 9-cell Lithium-Ion Battery.

Conclusion:

Alienware m-17x is a stunning machine, its brilliant, but it is designed for one purpose: Gaming and it is not portable, too big and too heavy for many other uses. It also costs a lot, starting from $1799, and a full spec model costs more than $4000, which is also very expensive. But if a gaming laptop is needed, and the cost is not a problem, this is the best in the market.
